Spoonbill Publications is our own publishing house- sounds very grand, but truth is, we decided to publish the book ourselves so were able to dream up our own publishers name.
After Jim's death we found huge solace in being outdoors in the wilder places. Our home near the wonderful Dee Estuary made this easy for us and we soon began to notice in new ways all the amazing nature on our doorstep. The abundant bird life, which previously we'd only had a passing interest in, seemed for a while, to be performing especially for us. Our eyes were opened in new and wonderful ways and we began to enjoy learning and absorbing all kinds of fresh and surprising knowledge.
When we revisited Hong Kong in 2009, we spent a day in Mai Po Wetlands (left), a precious and endangered area threatened by the massive urban sprawl of mainland China, just a stone's throw away. Here we watched the increasingly rare Black Faced Spoonbills flying overhead. Our guide for the day, Dennis, was thrilled to see them in such large numbers - so as fledgling bird watchers we followed his lead and were also thrilled!
When we returned home we discovered that the occasional spoonbill would appear on our own Parkgate Marsh too. (Not black faced ones though, before any purists remind us!) We were chuffed... it seemed such a lovely wild link with Hong Kong, where part of our hearts will always be. So that's why Spoonbill Publications was born - after all you get Penguin and Puffin books, so why not?
